Unit 79

Task 1

Technology

Modern gaming has adopted a great deal of new technology which may have been completely ignored or failed some years ago. A prime example of such technology is that of Virtual Reality HMD’s (Head Mounted Displays). HMD’s have been around for many years with even Nintendo trying to crack the VR market with the Virtual Boy in 1995.

The Virtual Boy was considered to be a commercial failure due its poor display that only used the colour red and it just generally lacks the technology to create an immersive experience for gamers.

Virtual Reality was then forgotten about for some time, especially for games as the technology has been too expensive and it was thought that good VR was just impossible to do. In 2012 though, a 20 year old engineer created the next huge leap in VR technology with the Oculus Rift. The Rift is a head mounted display, like the Virtual Boy and many other devices but unlike other devices the Rift actually does provide an immersive 3D environment due to its combination of head tracking, LCD display and highly adjustable setup which allows player's to get their VR experience tailored to them.

The Oculus Rift is currently only available as a developer kit but is expected to become commercially available this year.
