The game reboot of the forbidden planet movie is a third person Sci-Fi action/RPG that will take place on an uncharted planet. The player will be able to freely explore several massive areas of the planet and will use their ship to travel between these sections. At the beginning of the game players are able to create either a male or female human character and edit various parts such as build, race etc. and there are several default male and female voices as each player's avatar can still partake in the game's cinematics without being a silent protagonist.
The game will feature third person combat with an over the shoulder view and it will focus heavily on collecting and upgrading gear. Due to this emphasis on upgrading and switching items the interface has been designed to be as informative but simple as possible, this is demonstrated by the quick-switch system which allows players to access their 10 best pieces of gear at any point without getting in the way of the action.
The game will be a strict single player only experience that only has the main campaign as a playable game mode but there is re-playability present due to the ability to start a new game+ which allows users to play through the game again with newly acquired abilities and all of their previously collected gear. There will also be four different difficulties available to players:
- Casual
- Normal
- Hardcore
- Master
The Master difficulty is only unlocked after beating the game of hardcore and will be significantly tougher than Hardcore so that it can counter player's higher level stats that they have accumulated from previous play-throughs.
Controls
At the moment the primary focus of the interface development has been on the console platforms as it is much faster to map out the functions on a 16 button controller as many can be multiple use whereas a PC keyboard has roughly 105 buttons, each of which must be individual functions which is much more complicated. There is also an issue on the PC platform where the quick switch inventory is no more efficient than the standard one which would need to be resolved in the future.
The visual style of the game will be similar to Sci-fi games such as Halo, Mass Effect and Farcry. The environments will consist of lush forests and large snowy mountain peaks but there is also the dark futuristic technology of the alien race that is sometimes seen above ground but it is mostly found in the underground tunnels and rooms of temples.
In terms of audio for the game there will be electronic mucic which will vary in pace depending on the situation. The soundtrack would be similar in style to that of the movie Tron Legacy which was created by Daft Punk. Below is an example of a song that I could imagine being a main theme for the game.
For big dramatic set pieces in the game I would like music similar to that of Hans Zimmer's OST for Man of Steel which features powerful orchestral music. This song also has a sinnister feel to it which suits the main enemy in my game. This video is just a preview of the song be the full version can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAiNiIqr7Fw
This file is a collection of robot sounds that I found on the web which provides a rough idea for what the weapons, gunshots and explosions could sound like in the game.
The sounds can be previewed here:

I also found a collection of free Sci-Fi HUD sounds which would be perfect for the game as there is a wide variety available.
